OpenOffice est ce que l'on pourrait appeler le "challenger" de la catégorie suite bureautique PC. En effet, il est un adversaire très efficace à Microsoft Office sans, toutefois, lui faire de l'ombre. Car il faut le rappeler les deux suites ne jouent pas sur la même catégorie car elle OpenOffice ne possède pas toutes les fonctions de Microsoft Office. De plus, OpenOffice a pour principal concurrent son fork, LibreOffice, plus avancé en terme de développement , il est dirigé par ses anciens développeurs réunis dans une fondation "The Document Foundation"
A l'époque sous l'égide de Sun Microsystem, puis d'Oracle, c'est maintenant sous la baguette d'Apache qu'OpenOffice propose diverses applications pour faire du traitement de texte (Writer), tableur (Calc), présentation (Impress), formules (Math), dessins (Draw) et base de données (Base).
