VMware Workstation est un logiciel de virtualisation de système d'exploitation crée en 1999 par la société VMware et est le logiciel le plus connu avant d'avoir été rejoint par Parallels Desktop, Virtualbox et d'autres logiciels gratuit et open-source comme QEMU ou KVM sur Linux.
VMware Workstation possède d'innombrables options et est capable de faire tourner des machines virtuelles en utilisant plusieurs cœurs du système hôte en recourant aux fonctions de virtualisation matérielles inclus avec les processeurs récents.
Depuis la version 11.0, VMware Workstation n'est disponible que pour les machines 64 bits à partir de Windows 7 et pour Linux en version d'évaluation. Les utilisateurs de macOS ont droit à un autre logiciel appelé VMware Fusion.

VMware Workstation Player
Crée en 2008 pour être la version gratuite et simplifiée de VMware Workstation, VMware Player était à ses débuts qu'un lecteur de machine virtuelles. C'est seulement à partir de la version 3.0 que la société a permis aux utilisateurs de pouvoir créer des machines... Seulement, la licence du logiciel passe à un mode d'utilisation gratuit pour un usage non-commercial, ceux qui voulaient plus de fonctions devaient se rediriger vers Workstation.
La version 5.0 donne vie à la version Pro du logiciel, donnant la possibilité aux professionnels de posséder un logiciel plus léger mais s'intégrant aux fonctionnalités serveurs vSphere.
Depuis la version 7.0, VMware Player abandonne le support des versions 32 bits des systèmes d'exploitation Windows et Linux.
Depuis le 6 Mai 2024, Workstation Player est abandonné au profit de Workstation Pro qui adopte la licence gratuite pour utilisation personnelle. Néanmoins, Workstation Player recevra toujours des mises à jour jusqu'à la fin de sa période de support.
