Tout comme sa déclinaison navigateur, Thunderbird de Mozilla est devenu un poids lourd dans le domaine des clients de courrier électronique. Tout d'abord en concurrence avec Outlook Express, ses principaux concurrents étaient également Windows Live Mail sous Windows, l'application Mail de macOS et Evolution sous Linux.
Depuis la version 10.0, Thunderbird permet à ceux qui n'aimaient pas le développement à cycle court (6 semaines) d'avoir une version à support étendu baptisée "ESR" où chaque mise à jour espacée de 6 semaines n'apportent que des corrections de failles de sécurité.
Après avoir mis le développement en "pause" depuis la version 17.0 en mettant en avant la version "ESR" comme version principale du logiciel. C'est la version 135.0 qui ré-inverse les rôles à nouveau. Ainsi, les nouveautés principales seront incluses dans ces versions dites "normales" tandis les versions "ESR" opteront plus sur le côté stable et sécurité.
